Do You Really Need 48 Megapixels for Everyday Photos?
More megapixels can be useful. But for the way most of us actually enjoy our photos, they are often far more than we need.
Smartphone cameras continue to improve, and megapixel counts have become one of the easiest numbers to market.
12MP. 24MP. 48MP. Sometimes even more.
That naturally creates an assumption:
Myth: The higher the megapixel count, the better my photos will be.
The reality is more nuanced.
High-resolution photography absolutely has advantages. If you need to crop deeply into a photo, extract a distant subject, create a large physical print, or preserve maximum editing flexibility, those extra pixels can be valuable.
But that is not how most family photos are ultimately experienced.
Most of our digital memories are viewed on a phone, shared through social media, displayed on a tablet, or enjoyed on a Wi-Fi-connected digital picture frame.
And those devices use only a fraction of the pixels captured by a modern 24MP or 48MP smartphone camera.
What does 48MP actually mean?
A 48-megapixel image contains roughly 48 million individual pixels.
That gives the photographer considerable flexibility for cropping and enlargement. But the device displaying that picture may contain only two or three million physical pixels.
For example, Apple's current iPhone 17 has a 2622 ร 1206-pixel OLED display at 460 ppi, which works out to approximately 3.16 megapixels on the entire screen.
That is an important distinction.
A 48MP photograph viewed full-screen on an iPhone is not being displayed at 48 megapixels. The phone has to reduce that photograph to fit roughly 3.2 million screen pixels.
In other words, for ordinary viewing, much of that captured resolution is simply not visible.
A quick comparison
One current 10-inch Skylight digital frame, for example, uses a 1920 ร 1200 display. That means its entire screen contains about 2.3 million pixels.
LinkedIn recommends photos at least 1080 pixels wide for strong display quality and supports images up to a 4:5 portrait ratio.
So when a 48MP phone image is destined for a social post or digital picture frame, the original can contain 10 to 30 times more pixels than the final viewing environment can actually display.
Then why do phone manufacturers offer 24MP and 48MP cameras?
Because additional resolution can be extremely useful in the right circumstances.
Cropping
Imagine photographing wildlife, a child on a sports field, or a landmark from a distance.
If the subject occupies only a small part of the original photograph, a 48MP capture gives you more pixels to work with when cropping.
That can make a meaningful difference.
Large prints
Print resolution is another legitimate reason.
A high-resolution source becomes valuable when creating large prints that people may examine closely. An image intended for a 20-inch or 30-inch wall print has very different requirements from an image displayed on a 10-inch digital frame.
Editing flexibility
Higher-resolution originals also provide greater latitude for:
cropping and reframing.
straightening.
perspective correction.
image stabilization.
detailed retouching.
creating multiple compositions from one photograph.
So the lesson is not that 48MP is unnecessary.
It is that 48MP is primarily a capture advantage, not necessarily a viewing requirement.
The hidden cost of all those extra pixels
Higher resolution also means more data.
Actual file size varies considerably depending on the phone, image content, compression level, JPEG versus HEIF, HDR processing, and other settings.
But representative compressed-photo sizes might look something like this:


Now multiply that difference by thousands of photos.
A collection of 10,000 images averaging 12 MB each requires roughly 120 GB.
If optimized display versions average 800 KB each, the equivalent viewing library would require roughly 8 GB.
The original high-resolution images can still be preserved. The point is that you do not necessarily need to move, download, process, and display those originals every time you want to enjoy them.

There is nothing wrong with capturing a photograph at 24MP or 48MP.
In fact, when storage permits, keeping a high-quality original can be valuable.
But the high-resolution original is best thought of as a digital negative.

You do not need to send that digital negative everywhere the photo is displayed.
